Sufría una deficiencia visual congénita que limitaba su visión en más de un 75 por ciento, sin embargo esto nunca fue un obstáculo para dedicarse a fondo a este deporte. Tanto es así que a sus 32 años ha llegado a conseguir diversos galardones, como dos medallas de plata en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Sidney y Atenas. Actualmente imparte clases de judo en su propio club en Almería, “Jushirokan”, que fundó con varios compañeros y que tiene presencia en otras ciudades españolas como Madrid y Guadalajara. En su club, imparte clases de judo a otras personas con discapacidad, niños y personas en riesgo de exclusión social. David confía en poder clasificarse para participar en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Río de Janeiro 2016.
