Maribel y Plácido son biólogos. En 1987 adquirieron una finca, por entonces usada como escombrera, en las proximidades de La Puebla del Río, en Sevilla, muy cerca también del Parque Nacional de Doñana. Su pasión por las aves y un incansable trabajo han hecho que el lugar, tres décadas después, se haya convertido en un verdadero paraíso para estos animales. La Cañada de los Pájaros es un centro de recuperación de especies en peligro de extinción, refugio para las aves cuando las condiciones de vida empeoran en el entorno y, desde 1992, una referencia para ornitólogos y para el público amante de la naturaleza en general.
