El almeriense Dionisio Godoy nació en el seno de una familia de pintores en el año 1932. No tuvo que aprender a dibujar ni a pintar, era algo innato en el que era nieto del pintor Emiliano Godoy, hijo del también pintor, Rafael Godoy y sobrino de Jesús de Perceval, uno de los padres del Movimiento indaliano. Referente nacional entre los acuarelistas, su profesión de delineante queda reflejada en sus obras donde se maneja con maestría en la plasmación de dibujos arquitectónicos. Los entendidos y el público destacan también la delicadeza con la que pinta las figuras de sus acuarelas. A los 22 años realizó su primera exposición. La que había sido su profesora, la escritora Celia Viñas, se encargó de la presentación de la misma, siendo este escrito su última publicación antes de fallecer. Además de pintar, Dioniso Godoy ha dedicado 40 años de su vida a recopilar información sobre pintores almerienses del siglo XIX, publicando dos libros sobre ellos.
