Desde pequeño ya escribía sus propias obras de teatro, para al mismo tiempo dirigirlas y representarlas. Juan Carlos Rubio nació en Montilla, provincia de Córdoba. En 1997 estrenó en España su primera obra. Ha estrenado en muchos países, como Estados Unidos, Australia y México. Ha participado en guiones televisivos como Farmacia de Guardia, Manos a la obra y Adolfo Suárez, el Presidente. En 2009 fue candidato al Goya por su guión en la película Retorno a Hansala. Fue reconocido en Nueva York en 2010 y en 2013 obtuvo el Premio Lope de Vega de Teatro.
