Es uno de los mayores exponentes de la poesía española del siglo XX, fundador del Grupo Cántico junto a Mario López, Ricardo Molina y Juan Bernier. Es Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Las Letras, Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana e Hijo Predilecto de Andalucía.
