Informático de profesión nacido en Alemania, Juan Carlos López, hijo de padre sevillano emigrante y madre alemana, nació y vivió toda su vida en el país centroeuropeo. En 2007 decidió instalarse en Almonte (Huelva) y, unos años después, puso en marcha un proyecto tan novedoso como arriesgado: creó junto a dos socios la primera explotación agrícola dedicada a la producción de bayas goji en España. Sus propiedades antioxidantes y antibacterianas y su riqueza en vitaminas y minerales hacen de este fruto originario del Himalaya, según López, “uno de los productos más saludables del mundo”. Tras unos comienzos difíciles por el desconocimiento de estas bayas en el mercado europeo, empieza a conquistar desde su finca onubense de Niebla los mercados de Suiza, Alemania, Austria y Bélgica.

  1. Nos vendieron la moto de que las Bayas de Goji son del Himalaya, y no es cierto. En el Himalaya no crecen ni jaramagos. La Baya de Goji es una solanácea, de la familia del tomate. Difícilmente puede criarse en el Himalaya. En China se cultiva, pero en las llanuras del Río Amarillo. Y como dato, decir que las que provienen del país asiático, suelen venir con restos de varios pesticidas.
    Esto no quita que tenga todas las propiedades que se le atribuyen, y el merito de este agricultor por embarcarse en tan arriesgado proyecto.
