Rosario Ortega es natural de Jaén. Cuando se fue a la Universidad de Sevilla para estudiar la carrera, tuvo dudas entre especializarse en Historia Moderna y Contemporánea o en Psicología. Se decantó por esta última, ya que a ella lo que más le gusta son las personas. Se licenció en Psicología por la Universidad de Barcelona, ya que en Andalucía aún no existía esta carrera. Después, realizó un doctorado sobre ‘Juego Infantil y la construcción del conocimiento social’. Su interés por el acoso escolar, el bullying, despertó cuando estuvo realizando una estancia investigadora en la Universidad de Sheffield (Reino Unido), por lo que cuando regresó a Sevilla empezó a investigar sobre este tema en España, del que apenas se sabía nada. Ha sido miembro fundador del Observatorio Europeo de la Violencia Escolar y del Observatorio Internacional de la Violencia Escolar y es Miembro Senior (más de 10 años de antigüedad con responsabilidad evaluadora) de la European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction.
